Find your electricity region
Guide · updated 2026-08-23
Every GB electricity meter belongs to one of fourteen Grid Supply Point groups, and unit rates and standing charges differ between them. Yours is written on your bill.
Read it off your MPAN
The MPAN — Meter Point Administration Number, sometimes labelled "Supply Number" — is the long number on your electricity bill, usually printed in a grid with an S at the left. The bottom row starts with a two-digit distributor ID, and that pair of digits is your region.
Gas has no equivalent: gas prices vary by region too, but the meter number (MPRN) does not encode it.
Distributor ID to region

Why it changes the price
The wholesale cost of electricity is broadly national. Everything bolted on top of it is not: distribution charges, transmission charges and losses all vary by where the power has to travel. Northern Scotland and North Wales are typically at the expensive end; the East Midlands and Yorkshire at the cheaper end.
On a half-hourly tariff the regional gap widens at peak times, because the network charges that differ are themselves time-weighted.
What if I get it wrong?
You will see prices for a region you are not in — usually a few pence per kWh out, occasionally more. Nothing breaks, but a comparison built on the wrong region is not worth much. Connecting an Octopus account removes the guesswork: the region is read from your own meter point.
Common questions
Where do I find my MPAN?
On your electricity bill, usually in a boxed grid marked with an S. It is not on your gas bill — gas uses a separate MPRN.
How many electricity regions are there in Great Britain?
Fourteen Grid Supply Point groups, lettered A to P. There is no I and no O, to avoid confusion with the digits 1 and 0.
Do gas prices vary by region too?
Yes, though usually by less than electricity. Unlike electricity, the gas meter number does not tell you which region you are in.
See it on your own numbers. halfhourly.uk shows live half-hourly prices for every GB region for free, and if you connect an Octopus account it prices your own smart-meter readings against every tariff.
