Why your gas meter reads in m³ and your bill in kWh
A gas meter measures volume. Energy content varies slightly with the composition of the gas, so the bill converts volume to kWh using a calorific value published for your area, typically around 39.5 MJ/m³, together with a volume correction factor of 1.02264.
The arithmetic is: cubic metres × 1.02264 × calorific value ÷ 3.6 = kWh. An older imperial meter reads in hundreds of cubic feet and is multiplied by 2.83 first. This is also why a smart gas meter's half-hourly data needs converting before it can be priced, which the usage page does for you.
Gas tariff choices are narrower
There is no half-hourly gas tariff — gas is not traded or metered that way for domestic customers. The choice is between the capped variable rate on Flexible and whatever fixed product is currently on sale, and it comes down to the same fix-or-float question as electricity.
Common questions
How do I convert gas m³ to kWh?
Multiply cubic metres by 1.02264, multiply by the calorific value (around 39.5), then divide by 3.6. For an imperial meter reading in hundreds of cubic feet, multiply by 2.83 first to get cubic metres.
Is there a half-hourly gas tariff?
No. Domestic gas is not priced or settled half-hourly, so gas tariffs have a single unit rate rather than a price per settlement period.
