How Flux pays
Flux has three import periods — a cheap overnight block, a peak evening block and a standard day rate — mirrored by three export rates. The export peak is the point of the tariff: energy sent back to the grid between roughly 16:00 and 19:00 earns substantially more than at any other time.
A battery is close to essential. Solar alone generates least when the export rate is highest, so without storage you sell at the low daytime rate and buy at the high evening one — the wrong way round.
Flux versus Outgoing
Flat Outgoing Octopus pays one rate whenever you export, which suits solar with no battery. Flux pays more, but only in a window you have to be able to hit. Compare what you would actually have earned on the export rates page.
Common questions
Do I need a battery for Octopus Flux?
Not strictly, but without one you cannot shift export into the premium evening window, which is where most of the tariff's value sits.
Is Flux import and export together?
Yes. Flux is a paired tariff: an import product and an export product with matching time bands.
