Three ways to be paid
Flat Outgoing Octopus pays one rate whenever you export. Agile Outgoing pays the half-hourly wholesale price, so it earns most in the evening peak and can pay almost nothing on a sunny afternoon when everyone else's panels are also exporting. The Smart Export Guarantee products are the regulated floor.
For solar with no battery, flat Outgoing usually wins: your generation peaks at midday, which is exactly when Agile Outgoing pays least. With a battery, Flux or Agile Outgoing normally beats it, because you can hold the energy until the evening.
Export and import are separate tariffs
You can be on one supplier's import tariff and pair it with a different export product, and the two are billed independently. Compare all the current export rates for your region on the export rates page.
Common questions
How much does Octopus pay for exported electricity?
It depends on the export product. Flat Outgoing pays a single rate per kWh; Agile Outgoing pays the half-hourly wholesale price; SEG products pay a lower regulated rate. Live figures for every region are on the export rates page.
Do I need a smart meter to export?
Yes. Export payments need a meter that can measure and report what you send back, which in practice means a smart meter with export readings enabled.
Which tariff is cheapest for you? Headline rates cannot answer that. Connect your Octopus account and halfhourly.uk prices your last 28 days of real half-hourly readings against every tariff's real rates, standing charge included.
